Well known local fund-raiser Martin Mullan organised a team of volunteers who created The 10,001 Santas project, Derry's attempt on the "Guinness Book of World Records" world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Santa Claus.
In the preceding weeks Liverpool had gathered 6,000 Santas, Los Vegas had 7,250 Santas. In response, more than 13,000 Derry people registered... and 12,965 of them were counted as they paraded around Derry's historic City walls on the day, dressed as Santa Claus. It will be a few weeks before the count is officially recognised by the Guinness World Records organisation.
The event raised more than £400,000 to be divided between four charities. This included a donation of £10 by each participant and sponsorship from thirty local organisations. The charities that will benefit are:
From 6:00 am a huge team of volunteers started organising the city centre. Almost 12,000 people had registered before hand and a further 1,500 people registered on the day.
When asked whether he would make it an annual event - Derry people like nothing better than dressing up - organiser, Martin Mullan said "I'll let someone else break the Guinness World Record the people of Derry set, before I try and break it."
