Craigavon Bridge seen from the riverside walk next to Foyle Valley Railway.
It was one of those Summer days in Derry when a shower is never far away.. I was glad to get the photographs taken before the rain started again.
There are two other panoramas of Craigavon Bridge:
Derry was once a rail hub with four different lines all converging on the city. Throughout the twentieth century and certainly after partition the railways gradually faded and the line to Dublin via Omagh and Dungannon was axed in the "Beeching Cuts" .
Historically the lower deck of the Craigavon Bridge was used for rail and the upper deck for road traffic. Now it is the only double-decker traffic bridge in Europe. In this view you can see the two decks clearly.
The Foyle Valley Railway Museum re-created part of the line along the West bank of the River Foyle and for a time operated a "pleasure trip" for tourists. Although the line is at present "dormant" the museum was re-opened this summer. We may yet see the train return to the FVR line.
